Mettoy toys & trains

Mettoy-logoThe Mettoy company , founded by German emigree Philip Ullmann in 1933. Ullmann set up a business in Stimpson Avenue, Northampton, England. He had twenty one years experience running his own toy company in Germany called Tipp, and he was soon joined by South-African born German, Arthur Katz, who had previously worked for him. In the 1940s and 1950s Mettoy produced a large range of diecast model cars & vehicles which proved to be popular and Ullmann and Katz realised that a wider range of toy cars could not only be profitable, but could also break the stranglehold that Meccano's range of Dinky Toys had over the market.

In 1964, Mettoy introduced a range of smaller scale vehicles called Husky Toys. These retailed at a lower retail price than the larger Corgi Toys, and competed with Matchbox Toys.

More big selling film and television tie-in models were released over the next few years, each with special features to entertain children, and in 1966 Mettoy were awarded two of the most prestigious awards; 'The Queen's Award To Industry' and the 'National Association Of Toy Retailers' Highest Standards Award'.

Thanks for that John, I have seen that info before but was hoping to pin it down to a particular year.
I had a blue one that my Dad brought back from a visit to the commercial motor show at Earls Court, I have just recently acquired a very good condition red version.
Thanks again, cheers Bill.
Let's see if another visitor can be of more help :-)

No idea, sorry. Around 1960, but I don't know the exact year.
