The company Wilhelm Schroeder and partner was founded in 1912 by Wilhelm Schroeder and Ernst Wortmann. The name Wilesco results of the initials of these two founder members. The steam toy company started its production of model steam engines in the middle of the last century.
While the Wilesco company dates back to 1912, their early business was the production of kitchen utensils. They didn't begin producing live model steam engine toys until around 1950. In the 1930s they manufactured steam engine parts for Fleischmann steam engines. By the 1970s, Marklin and Fleischmann had dropped out as steam model makers, leaving only Jensen steam, Mamod and Wilesco as major makers of live steam toy models.
Nowadays, Wilesco steam toys are collectible items, especially the Wilesco steam roller and the highly collectible 'Atomic Plant' Wilesco R200 steam engine. High prices are paid for old engines which are in good shape.
